IGBO ICON: Remembering F.C. Ogbalu (1927-1990)
This week, we honour Chief Frederick Chidozie Ogbalu, the "father" of Igbo language standardisation. Born on July 20, 1927, in Adagbe, Abagana, in present-day Anambra State, Ogbalu was a visionary educator whose passion for our language began during his studies at Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha.
A lifelong scholar, he earned his Higher Elementary Teachers' Certificate in 1946, followed by the Nigerian Senior Teachers' Certificate in Geography and History in 1953. He later achieved his degree in Economics from the University of London as a private candidate in 1954, showcasing his dedication to education.
His founding of the Society for Promoting Igbo Language and Culture (SPILC) in 1949 revolutionised Igbo language education. Through his University Publishing Company in Onitsha, he published over 100 books in Igbo, becoming one of the first Nigerians to write extensively in the language. Despite facing significant challenges, including the destruction of his press during the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, he persevered in his mission to standardise and promote our mother tongue.
Ogbalu's dedication to preserving Igbo heritage, from his early days as a teacher to becoming a pioneering publisher and cultural advocate, continues to inspire language learners like us today.
His work laid the foundation for modern Igbo language education and cultural preservation until his passing on October 21, 1990, following a fatal motor accident. Chief Frederick Chidozie Ogbalu left behind a remarkable legacy that continues to influence Igbo studies worldwide.

MUSIC OF THE WEEK: "Igbo Amaka" by Flavour 🎵
This week's musical spotlight celebrates Flavour's powerful anthem to our beautiful language and culture. "Igbo Amaka" (Igbo is Beautiful) is more than just a song - it's a celebration of our identity and a reminder of the beauty in our mother tongue.
Released in 2018, this track showcases Flavour's masterful blend of traditional highlife with contemporary sounds. His rich vocals, accompanied by traditional instruments, create a perfect backdrop for learning and practicing Igbo phrases. The chorus "Igbo amaka" (Igbo is beautiful) is particularly catchy and easy for language learners to sing along to.
